What Makes a "Good" Image?
Spoiler: It's not perfect composition
As an Iowa Photographer, I’ve heard it all—"Don’t crop the limbs," "Make sure the lighting is perfect," "Follow the rule of thirds." And while those technical tips can absolutely shape a photo, I don’t believe they define what makes it good.
Some of the most meaningful images I’ve ever taken break the rules. Maybe an arm is cropped out. Maybe the light is moody or a little messy. Maybe the composition is unconventional.
But the emotion? Unmatched.
To me, a good image isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection. It’s about how the photo makes you feel when you look at it. It’s the split-second your eyes filled with tears as you saw your partner walk toward you. It’s your child laughing so hard their nose scrunches up. It’s the quiet moment between poses that tells the whole story.
I’m not here to capture just what something looked like—I’m here to capture what it felt like.
And sometimes, what’s “technically imperfect” is what makes the photo so beautifully honest.
As a lifestyle and wedding photographer in Iowa, I want my clients to know:
- It’s okay if your toddler won’t sit still.
- It’s okay if the wind blows your hair out of place.
- It’s okay if the frame isn’t perfectly balanced.
What matters most is that the moment is real.
A “good” image doesn’t live in the details—it lives in the feeling.
So let’s throw out the pressure to be perfect. Let’s make room for images that breathe, laugh, cry, and tell the truth. That’s where the magic lives.
